Overview of the second week
This past week working on my academic concentration I have accomplished many things. I was able to complete my concentration paper, the annotated bibliography, and complete my narrative reflection. Over the two weeks I learned some valuable tasks for my future in college, such as writing many papers in a short time and communicating with others. The following is a recap of how my week went.
I have learned so much about communicating with people, and grown academically completing this project. Academically I have learned how volatile some chemicals in plastics are. These volatile chemicals are often used and they are significant to endocrine disruption because it suggests change in organisms body function because of chemicals that mimic hormones. The understanding of endocrine disruption has become crucial to my knowledge because there continue to be more chemicals found to be endocrine disruptors. The other very relevant idea was that materials once in the ocean disrupt organisms' lives through endocrine disruption, being a carcinogen, bioaccumulation, or accumulation of large amounts of mass. On the communication front I have learned how to be heard, when people want to hear you, and when they choose to have selective hearing. To be heard you need to talk with those around you about your ideas. Sometimes that means setting up a meeting with a dean of student life and talking about what you wish to accomplish. Other times even if you request to set up a meeting people will not always respond. In addition people may hear your ideas out but have no interest in following through on those ideas you offered up, and they may choose to ignore you. These are all normal things that happen when you try to make a change in an organization who has more power than a single person does.
